Curriculum

Our 4th grade curriculum here at Tolland Intermediate School is designed to be challenging so our students gain a widespread base of knowledge in all academic areas.  As a result, our students become more independent as they bear a greater responsibility for their own learning, their own behavior, and their own success.  Here are some highlights of some of our academic programs.

Reading:
In fourth grade we are using a reading program called Journeys, which is a researched-based, comprehensive Language Arts program.  It incorporates five key themes: making meaning, effective expression, foundational skills, content knowledge, and language development.

We use a variety of materials including our novels, trade books, mentor texts, our anthology, and textbooks.  Assessment of progress is measured through your child’s work on various comprehension questions, reader response journal entries, group discussions, and benchmark assessments.  Reading support is provided through our Reading Department.

Remember! Your child MUST have a silent reading book in class at all times.

Writer's Workshop:
The district has adopted the Writer's Workshop program for writing.  Writing units include the following genres:  narrative, informational, literary essay, and poetry.

Math:
The fourth grade curriculum covers whole numbers, prime/composite numbers, estimation, multiplication and division, fractions and mixed numbers, decimals, angles, perpendicular and  parallel lines, squares and rectangles, area and perimeter, and measurement conversion.

Science:
We have a new science program this year that covers changing Earth, biomimicry, and erosion.

Social Studies:
We cover map skills, the Northeast Region, basic economics, and state government.
