“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”
― Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!
Because I strongly believe that reading is so important, our classroom is a "reading first" classroom. This means that at every opportunity we have, my students and I will "read first" before we do anything else.
My goal as a teacher is a simple one; I want my students to become stronger, more confident, strategic readers who develop a life-long love of reading. To foster this love of reading, in our classroom:
- I read aloud to the class every day stories from different genres and subjects.
- we self-choose books from the school library we want to read based on our interests and reading level.
- we spend time each day talking and writing about the texts we are reading.
- our homework includes an assignment to pleasure read at home for at least 20 minutes every day.
So I encourage all my students to grab themselves a good book, find a comfortable, quiet place to relax, and....
READ!
