Structured Literacy within a Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) framework is an educational approach designed to provide systematic and explicit instruction in reading and writing. Here’s a breakdown of what it entails:
Structured Literacy
- Explicit Instruction: Teaching is direct and clear, with a focus on phonology, sound-symbol association, morphology, syntax, semantics, fluency and comprehension.
- Systematic Approach: Lessons are organized in a logical order, starting with the simplest concepts and gradually moving to more complex ones.
- Cumulative Learning: Each lesson builds on the previous one, ensuring that students have a solid foundation before moving on to new material.
- Diagnostic Teaching: Instruction is tailored to meet the individual needs of students, with ongoing assessments to guide teaching decisions.
MTSS Framework
- Multi-Tiered Support: MTSS provides different levels of support based on student needs:
- Tier 1: Universal instruction for all students.
- Tier 2: Targeted interventions for students who need additional support.
- Tier 3: Intensive interventions for students with significant needs.
- Data-Driven Decision Making: Regular assessments and data collection inform instructional strategies and interventions.
