Third Grade Library Curriculum
Third grade library students continue to build on past knowledge of the library media center, especially how it is organized and learn to locate information independently. The beginning of the school year focuses on library skills and behavior. Then there is an introduction of Destiny, the online T.I.S. library catalog to look up and find books and to the Dewey Decimal System library arrangement of the media center. Additional units of study throughout the year include: genres of fiction, dictionary, encyclopedia, and thesaurus use, Internet keyword searching and other fundamental computer skills, geography, poetry and story elements. Reading aloud, book talks, and monthly book displays in the library media center, all encourage reading from a wide variety of genres.
Fourth Grade Library Curriculum
Fourth grade library students review and expand their knowledge of library skills and organization. They learn intermediate search strategies in Destiny, the T.I.S. library online catalog, and locate and use more complex reference materials for research assignments. They review Dewey and library arrangement. Additional units of study throughout the year include: genres, research skills, dictionary, thesaurus, and encyclopedia use, intermediate Internet search techniques and fundamental computer skills. There is also book discussions and monthly book displays in the library media center, all encourage reading from a wide variety of genres.
