Music Update for September & October
Grade 3 Chorus: This is a great opportunity for students to sing together and perform. Chorus rehearsal meets once per week on either Monday or Thursday during school WIN block 2:40 to 3:10 p.m. There will be a few combined rehearsals also during school WIN block 2:40 to 3:10 p.m. A combined "dress rehearsal" to prepare for the concert performance with a piano accompanist will also meet in May date TBA during school WIN block 2:40 to 3:10 p.m. The concert will be Monday, June 1 at 7:00 p.m. with a student arrival time for warm up at 6:30 p.m. Join in the fun! Grade 3 Music: Students sing and move; they begin the year naming tunes by singing along. They are discovering elements of music and how to recognize quarter notes/rests. The composer of the month for September is Ludwig van Beethoven; students watch a video about fun facts and move along to famous songs composed by Beethoven. Students each have a recorder to play in class and learn to play the notes B, A, G.
Grade 4 Music: Students sing “Down by the Bay” and create their own rhyming lyrics. They also sing using Solfège syllables and hand symbols sol, la, mi; re, fa. Students play recorders and perform songs using the notes B, A, G with rhythms quarter notes/rests and two eighth notes. The composer of the month for September is Ludwig van Beethoven; students watch a video about his life and sing lyrics from the Ninth Symphony composed by Beethoven. Students move to and sing the song “That’s What,” learn to hear music inside their mind, and connect to Beethoven composing music once unable to hear music out loud. The composer of the month for October is Camille Saint-Saëns; students listen to Danse Macabre and follow the form of the song with a listening map.
Grade 5 Music: Students sing “This Land is Your Land” and create their own lyrics. They also sing using Solfège syllables and hand symbols sol, la, mi; re, fa; ti, do. The composer of the month for September is Ludwig van Beethoven; students watch a video about his life and sing lyrics from the Ninth Symphony composed by Beethoven. They also unpack the old language to find modern day meaning of “sunward” and “victors in the midst of strife” to illuminate Beethoven’s positive outlook while composing once becoming deaf. Students sing and move to the song “That’s What,” to hear music inside their mind, connecting to Beethoven composing music once unable to hear music out loud. The composer of the month for October is Camille Saint-Saëns; students listen to Danse Macabre and follow the form of the song with a listening map. Students play recorders and perform songs using the notes B, A, G with rhythms quarter notes/rests and two eighth notes. Students improvise their own created melody using notes B, A, G and learn elements of music: melody, harmony, ostinato.
